Richard Cohen, M.A.

Richard Cohen, M.A., a psychotherapist, educator and author, is one of the leading experts in the field of sexual reorientation and the author of the recently published book Coming Out Straight: Understanding and Healing Homosexuality (click here for excerpts).

Cohen is director of the International Healing Foundation (IHF), a non-profit organization he founded in 1990. Based in the Washington, D.C., area, IHF provides counseling and educational programs for families, couples and individuals. As director, Cohen travels extensively throughout the United States and Europe conducting healing seminars and educational programs on marital relations, communication skills, parenting skills, sexual reorientation and healing from abuse and addictions. He is a frequent guest lecturer on college and university campuses, and at therapeutic and religious conferences.

Cohen holds a Master of Arts degree in counseling psychology from Antioch University in Seattle and a bachelor's degree from Boston University. He has worked in child abuse treatment services, family reconciliation services, general counseling and support groups. For three years, he worked as an HIV/AIDS educator for the American Red Cross in Seattle.

As an expert in sexual reorientation therapy ­ both as a counselor and through his own personal experience transitioning from homosexual to heterosexual in the 1980s ­ Cohen has been interviewed by many newspaper, radio and television media, including appearances on such programs as 20/20 and Larry King Live. A board member of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays (PFOX), he is also a member of the American Counseling Association, the American Association of Christian Counselors and the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality. In addition to academic papers and his new book, Coming Out Straight, Cohen is the author of Alfie's Home, an illustrated children's book dealing with several common developmental causes of same-sex attractions.

Cohen, 48, resides in the Washington, D.C. area with his wife and three children.
